Winnetka History

In 1836, Erastus Patterson, his wife and their five children arrived from Vermont in the wooded hill that is today called Lloyd Park. The Pattersons decided to settle and build a tavern for travelers along the Green Bay Trail from Fort Dearborn, Chicago to Fort Howard, Wisconsin.

In 1854, Charles Peck and Walter S. Gurnee, president of the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad Co., created the original subdivision of Winnetka. The village was named "Winnetka" after a Native American phrase meaning "beautiful land." The first public school was established in 1859 and sat on the present-day Village Green. In 1869, Charles Peck donated the Village Green to Winnetka for park purposes. The same year, Winnetka was incorporated as a village with a population of 450.
